Carlos Andrés Rico

Biography
Carlos Andrés Rico graduated in music composition in Bogotá and in multimedia composition in Hamburg, where he lives since 2011. His work is diverse and moves between the classical and popular worlds. His compositions are used for theater and dance, but also presented independently as concert music or in the form of interventions in public spaces. His music reflects social themes and is frequently influenced by the cosmovision of Latin American original peoples.
His eclectic approach to music comes from a deep interest in studying music from the relation it has with society, and it is reflected in a doctoral thesis of artistic research (Dr. Sc. Mus.) for the Hamburg University for Music and Theatre, which he absolved in 2022.
Under the artistic name of Arepabahn he is active as producer, performer and Dj. His productions unite futuristic sounds with different traditions of the world, and his Dj sets are cosmic and danceable, and moves from ritual music to electric experimental sounds.
Besides producing and composing, he plays electric bass with the Hamburg band Las Flores Doradas, and as a curator he founded in 2017 SELVA, festival of contemporary music, performance and video that aims to create spaces for the dissemination of new talent and groundbreaking ideas from Latin America in Germany.

His compositions are used for stage dance (Tanzplattform 2024, Kampnagel International Summer Festival, Tanztage Berlin, among others) and music theater (JES! Stuttgart, Fundus Theater, Schwankhalle Bremen), but are also presented independently as concert music or in the form of interventions in public spaces.
Under the stage name Rico Danta, he works as a producer and performer (solo and for other artists such as Hêja Netirk). Under this name, he combines futuristic sounds with popular music from Latin America and the Global South. His live sets range from pop to experimental electronic sounds, always with a danceable touch.
His eclectic approach to music stems from a deep interest in exploring music in its relationship to society and is reflected in a doctoral thesis on artistic research (Dr. Sc. Mus.) at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater, which he will complete in June 2022. Since 2016, he has directed “Selva,” the festival for experimental short films, performance, and music from Latin America in Hamburg. In 2022, he was a recipient of the stART.up scholarship from the Claussen-Simon Foundation. Besides producing and composing, he plays electric bass with the Hamburg band Las Flores Doradas.
